Bread and Butter Pudding

Bread and Butter Pudding

A classic British dessert that is golden and buttery on top with a soft, custardy interior. Using slightly stale bread enhances texture, creating a dessert that feels indulgent yet comforting. Sweet but not overpowering, it is perfect with ice cream, cream, custard, or sauces of your choice. This version is less sweet than many American recipes, focusing on rich vanilla and butter flavors.

Recipe Notes

  • Bread – Classic white bread works best, but other breads like brioche, raisin bread, or hot cross buns can be used. Avoid overly dry stale bread that cannot be torn easily. Artisan breads with thick crusts can be used if fresh or slightly stale. Gluten-free bread works if of good quality.

  • Pre-sliced bread – Use 12 thick or 14 normal slices. Cut in half into triangles, layer with sultanas, and pour egg mixture evenly. Slightly stale bread absorbs egg mixture better.

  • Cream – Using cream adds richness. For milk-only version, use 4 eggs and 2 1/2 cups milk to ensure it sets.

  • Sultanas – Prevent over-browning by pushing excess below the surface.

  • Butter – Adding melted butter into the mixture distributes it evenly. Brushing top before and after baking adds extra golden richness.

  • Leftovers – Store in fridge for 4–5 days; topping remains crunchy if reheated. Freezing is likely fine.

  • Nutrition – Per serving, assuming 8 servings and excluding toppings.
